The Perfect Storm: Mine Closure in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria – Published paper

Authors: Scrase, A; Brereton, J

The closure of the large open cut coal mines in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, highlights the significant challenges faced by industry, government, community and Traditional Owners in managing the transition away from fossil fuels. Effective mine closure and rehabilitation should be integral components of the mining lifecycle, including initiating closure strategies at the outset of mining operations and continually adapting them throughout the mine’s lifespan. By taking this approach,  environmental impacts are reduced and the community transition is supported by creating opportunities for economic diversification and workforce reskilling.
