MLRA Webinars February 2021: LVRRS Implementation Actions

In February 2021 the MLRA hosted two webinars on the Latrobe Valley Regional Rehabilitation Strategy (LVRRS) Implementation Actions with guest speakers from the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning (DELWP) and the Department of Jobs Precincts and Regions (DJPR).

Webinar 1 LVRRS Implementation Actions 1 and 3, Tuesday, 2 February 2021.

The webinar discussed LVRRS Implementation Actions:

Climate Change Guidance (Action 1)

To support mine rehabilitation to be climate resilient, DELWP has provided guidance to mine licensees on using climate change scenarios for any mine rehabilitation planning involving rainfall-dependent water sources. This presentation will discuss how DELWP, in collaboration with research scientists from the Victorian Water and Climate Initiative, ensured that the guidance is both scientifically robust and consistent with practice across Victoria’s water industry.

Water Sharing in the Latrobe Valley (Action 3)

Latrobe Valley’s water allocation and use is covered by Victoria’s statutory water entitlement and planning framework and the Water Act 1989. This presentation will cover how Latrobe Valley water allocation and use is implemented, including provisions for protecting users’ water entitlements and rights.

The webinar discussed LVRRS Implementation Actions:

Feasibility of Alternative Water for Mine Rehabilitation (Action 4)

Given the prospect of a drying climate, existing and potential future uses for water in the region and the need for mine rehabilitation activities and the final landform to be climate resilient, the feasibility of using Alternative Water – if a water-based rehabilitation option progresses, is being further explored. In this presentation DELWP will explain alternative water sources, the different potential options that might be considered, and why.

Identification of non-water and contingency rehabilitation options to manage land stability and fire risks if sufficient water is not available (Action 5)

This action explores the opportunities, constraints, risks and benefits associated with rehabilitation options that do not involve filling the mines, partly or fully, with water.  It will also explore potential contingency rehabilitation options to manage land stability and fire risks in the event the mines proceed with a water-based rehabilitation option but sufficient water is not available to reach and maintain the desired water level. This session will provide an update on the progress on this action and next steps.
